5TH NEGROS CONCEPTUAL MARTIAL ARTS SEMINAR A SUCCESS

4 doctor-members of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc.-Iloilo Chapter traveled to the municipality of Murcia in Negros Occidental to attend the 5th Negros Conceptual Martial Arts Seminar "Fundamentals of Tapado" last April 14, 2006.

The 4 doctors from the College of Medicine of the West Visayas State University (WVSU) were CMAS-IC Chapter Head Dr. Raymund Antonio A. Maguad, Dr. Eugene Alicante Jr., Dr. Rey Mollenido, and Dr. Jason Rojas.

The training was conducted by Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA) President/Grandmaster Benefredo "Bebing" M. Lobrido at the spacious manokan of the Maguad Residence in Miranda St. Assisting GM Lobrido in the instruction is Filipino Tang Soo Do Master and Original Filipino Tapado Senior Instructor Elmer V. Montoyo of the Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA).

Also present during the training were CMAS Founders Narciso "Hansy" L. Alojado and James U. Sy Jr. and CMAS Core Officers Joeffrey S. Deriada, Francis Stephen A. Diaz, and Moises "Jung-Jung" G. Nifras Jr.

GM Lobrido worked on and polished the doctors' gripping, body mechanics, basic no. 1 and 2 strikes, movement shifts, and the pigar line. The training lasted 4 hours more or less.

The visiting doctors started their training in tapado under Dr. Maguad sometime last year. The seminar was their first time to train under the guidance of GM Lobrido. They had previously met the GM when he traveled to Iloilo to have OFTLSFA with S.E.C.

CMAS-IC is perhaps the first group to introduce tapado in a seminar-demo setting in the Panay Island, having conducted the "The World of Kung Fu and Arnis" Talk and Demo last February 4, 2006 at the Tuburan Study Center, 49 Gen. Luna St., Iloilo City.

JUFIMAC TO RUMBLE IN COMBAT TKD

Founder/Chief Instructor Diomedes N. Mamugay, 2nd degree black belt, will be fielding 6 players from his San Carlos Jungle Fighters Martial Arts Club (SACA JUFIMAC) to the upcoming 1st Combat Taekwondo Inter Club Tournament which will be held by the Combat Taekwondo Club-Main (CTC-Main) this April 22, 2006 at the Gaisano City San Carlos Supermall, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

The SACA JUFIMAC Team will include Jomay Bernanrdo (finweight), John Joseph Villardo (flyweight), Sean Rey Sanchez (bantamweight), Nino Rosales (featherweight), Rene Ortiz (lightweight), and Jacques Cyrus Dojinyo (welterweight).

SACA JUFIMAC placed 2nd place in the recently held 2nd Lee Gralto Defense Club Wushu Sanshou Invitational Competition last March 26, 2006 in San Carlos City. SACA JUFIMAC is affiliated with the Wushu Federation of the Philippines-Negros Occidental and the Muay Association of the Philippines-Negros Occidental.

Expected participating teams are CTC-Main (San Carlos) of Founder/President Lt. Col. Mercado, 6th degree black belt; CTC-Canlaon Chapter of Chief Instructor Joerdan Oca, 3rd degree black belt; Masang Taekwondo Brotherhood of Chief Instructor Ricaredo Panunciar, 3rd degree black belt; and CTC-Brgy. 2 Chapter of Chief Instructor Ernie Tranilla, 4th degree black belt.

Combat Taekwondo Club Founder Ret. Lt. Col. Epifamio F. Mercado is the Tournament Director.

SI SEMINAR BIG HUGE SUCCESS

39 cadet officers of the Silay Institute (SI) Citizenship Army Training (CAT) Unit underwent a basic martial arts course during the 2nd Silay Institute (SI) Self Defense Seminar on April 8, 2006 at the SI School Grounds in Silay City, Negros Occidental.

The Silay Institute CAT (SI CAT) Unit is under the supervision of Commandant Ricarido P. De La Cura Jr. and Assistant Commandant Gerardo "Gerry" J. Roldan. Silay Institute is run by its new Principal Dr. Angelina J. Guinanano.

Resource instructors were Founder/Chief Instructor Edwin J. Tusil and Senior Instructor Drodgel "Sunny" K. Benedicto of the Fight Club Combat and Streetfighting Center (FC) and Founder/Head Instructor James U. Sy Jr. of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS).

Silay Institute is an achiever in its CAT Program having been awarded Best in Ceremonial Parade and Best in Theoretical Exam in Sector 3 three times each during the Annual Tactical Inspection. It also placed 2nd place overall in its sector. Commandant De La Cura and Asst. Commandant Roldan hosted the 1st Silay Institute (SI) Self Defense Seminar last April 11, 2004 at the same venue. 37 cadet officers were in attendance then.

The three featured instructors presented a compact reality-based self defense crash course for the cadet officers. The seminar started out with lectures on the benefits and need for personal defense, the tools of protection, anatomical basis of the arts, legalities of self defense, confrontation psychology, training mindset, and application.

Benedicto started the training with the warm up and stretching exercises. Then Tusil and Benedicto presented the fighting stance, footwork, and basic punching and kicking techniques that are the most in a street defense situation. The participants had the chance to hone their striking skills with several attribute development drills, with and without partners.

Sy taught the fundamental body evasion, striking, and blocking of Lapu-Lapu Viñas arnis and the restraining holds of aikido and wild judo. He explained the distinction between edge and impact weapons and the appropriate ways to handle and deal with them.

Tusil is one of the few proponents of reality based and mixed martial arts in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental. He actively competed in the local karate and kickboxing tournament circuit in his younger days in the late 1980s. He is a shodan under Karate Master Enriquito "Enrik" B. Maguad Jr. of the Visayas Budokyokai. He has 19 years martial arts experience.

Benedicto is a black belt Senior Instructor under Tusil and assists in teaching kickboxing at the Fight club Main Gym. He is also ranked as a 2nd lieutenant in the Philippine Navy. He was a recipient of the Navy Duty Award. He has 19 years martial arts experience.

Sy is a certified instructor in several martial arts with a specialization in Negrense Filipino Martial Arts (FMA). He has trained under different masters in regions 6 and 7 and the NCR. He has 20 years martial arts experience covering Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Chinese, Thai, and western martial arts.

FIGHT CLUB 2 STARTED

Junior instructor Rey "Panoy" Emilia recently started Fight Club Combat and Streetfighting Center 2 (FC 2), the organization's first branch group. The new group trains every Tuesday and Thursday in several locations among them the Riverside Medical College (RMC), Sam's Slim Gym, and the University of St. La Salle (USLS).

Students come primarily from the college and high school departments. Training focus is on kickboxing. The new group was set up with permission from Founder/Chief Instructor Edwin J. Tusil, who holds kickboxing, grappling, and mixed martial arts classes for Fight Club-Main every MWF at Sam's slim Gym, 3F JTL Bldg., B.S. Aquino Drive (in front of the Redemptorist Church).

Other teaching staff for Fight Club-Main are James Emmanuel Infante, Cargeoren and mark Lusabia, and Linus Paul Ramos.
