CHI KUNG INTRODUCED TO LA SALLE PROFS

Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado taught a session of Chi Kung “energy work” during the 2006 La Sallian Special Studies Institute (LSSSI) Retreat on May 18, 2006 at the Balay Kalinungan, University of St. La Salle (USLS), La Salle Avenue, Bacolod City.

The retreat, which ran from May 14-20, 2006, was aimed at developing a deeper understanding of La Salle’s life, his books, and spirituality. 17 professors from different La Salle schools scattered all over the Philippines including Bacolod (St. Joseph’s, USLS), Iligan, Manila, and Ozamis attended the chi kung session.

The retreat was facilitated by the Center for La Sallian Ministries (CELAM) under the direction of Serge Villanueva and his staff Hansy Alojado, Slade Garzon, Renee Ledesma, and Jo Tero.

Chi Kung “energy work” is a generic term for Chinese arts/systems centered on breathing and physical flow exercises and meditation that seek to calm the mind and free it of stress, improve overall physical condition, and strengthen the various immune systems of the body to prevent disease and to retard the effects of aging.

Many of the traditional Chinese Kung Fu/Wushu systems have Chi Kung integrated into their training regimen. Tai Chi Chuan “grand ultimate fist,” for one, works on the harnessing and concentrated use of Chi “life force” for healthy living.

Alojado is Co-Founder of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society and acts as moderator for its USLS Chapter. He is a certified instructor of Aikido, Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis, Muay Thai, Original Filipino Tapado, Pencak Silat Olahraga, Sipa Sumbag (Kickboxing), Togle Style Modern Arnis, and Wushu. He
has been practicing Tai chi Chuan since the 1970s.

PRK. BULAK 8TH BOXING, 3RD WUSHU, & 1ST KICKBOX SET

The Black Falcon Martial Arts Association-Main (BFMAA-Main) of Chief Instructor Joery C. Amante is set to present 3 martial arts tournaments this coming weekend at the Prk. Bulak Basketball Court, Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod City as part of the purok’s annual fiesta celebration.

The 8th Prk. Bulak Boxing Showdown will be held on may 27, 2006, 3:00 P.M. Competing teams will include BFMAA-Main, Canaa Team of Coach Ramie Cabanag, and Filipinas Kickboxing of Founder/Chief Instructor Ricaredo Filipinas. The highlight of the boxing event is a special bout between Christian Plantinos of BFMAA-Main and Nishal Nandwani of Round 1 Gym/L.A., California.

The 3rd Prk. Bulak Wushu Sanshou Competition and the 1st Prk. Bulak Kickboxing Competition will be held on May 28, 2006, 3:00 P.M. Competing teams will include BFMAA-Main, Cobra Martial Arts of Leonardo Caballero, Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS) of Founders Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado and James U. Sy Jr., Fight Club Combat and Streetfighting Center (FC) of Founder/Chief Instructor Edwin J. Tusil, Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA) of Founder/President Master Elmer V. Montoyo and Asst. Chief Instructor Elmer “Don-Don” P. Montoyo Jr., and Thunder Kicks (Escalante) of Chief Instructor Jess Flores.

Some martial arts demonstrations are also expected. Participating academies are variously affiliated with Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP), Philippine Pencak Silat Association (Philsilat), Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP), All Philippine Sipa Sumbag Martial Arts Federation (APSMAF), and Intercontinental Federation of martial Arts schools (IFMAS).

Amante, who was recently elected as purok president by the local council, serves as the Negros Occidental Coordinator/President of the Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP). He has spearheaded the sustained, progressive, and widespread propagation of wushu sanshou in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental. WFP-Negros Occidental member organizations had organized a total of not less than 7 tournaments since the formal introduction of wushu sanshou and wushu taolu in the city and the province by WFP National Head Coach Yu Zhi Bo of Beijing, China last July 12-13, 2003.

Wushu sanshou, as defined by National Head Coach Yu Zhi Bo, is not a style of Chinese martial art but rather a set of rules wherein exponents from different styles of wushu (a.k.a. kung fu) can compete regardless of their stylistic preference for striking or throwing. Over time, other martial artists from Karate, Judo, Muay Thai, Western Boxing, etc. had joined wushu sanshou events to gain an idea how their own arts measure up to other disciplines.

Filipino martial arts exponents representing more than 10 federations, associations, and academies from Bacolod City, Bago City, Cauayan, Pontevedra, Silay City, and Talisay City gathered together at the Bacolod City Public Plaza to lend support and make the 2006 Arnis Day Grandmasters, Masters, and Seniors National Invitational arnis Championships a real success last March 19, 2006.

The event was organized by Grandmaster Hortencio Navales, Founder/President of the Bacolod Negros Arnis Federation International Inc. (BNAFII). The Arnis Day was started by GM navales in March 1979 to commemorate the historic battle between native Chief Lapu-Lapu and Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan, who was representing Spain, in the island of Mactan in 1521. He had it approved and consequently approved by the Bacolod City local government.

Grandmaster Romeo Oro of Cauayan’s Oro Arnis Club, representing BNAFII, figured in several demonstrations involving paired solo baston and empty handed defenses against the blade.

Col. Atty. Grandmaster Marcelo C. Jalandoon of Talisay City, Ph.D., Founder/President of the Negros Occidental Baston Federation (NOBF), brought the various grandmasters in his organization in support of the event.

Leading the NOBF entries for the exhibition competition were the combined Bago City delegation of the Guarra Style Modern Arnis and Self Defense Association (GSMASDA) of NOBF Vice President-South Negros Grandmaster Estanislao “Eslao” T. Guarra and Arjuka-Malingin of NOBF Board Director Grandmaster Isaac “Saac” T. Guarra and the Philippine Arnis (Kali) Escrima Martial Arts Federation International Inc. of NOBF Vice President-North Negros Grandmaster Jerson “Nene” Tortal of Talisay City.

The Tortal Clan’s dekiti tirsia siradas exhibition centered on the use of the long as well as the short blades. GM Nene Tortal stood out from the other Tortals with his visually captivating G.I. Joe type blue and gray camouflage uniform. The Guarra delegation showed sinawali, pangamut combining arnis, judo, and karate Filipino style, and modernist stickfighting. The Guarra demonstrators include Nievely Flores, Maryjune Guanga, Mark Jerson Guarra, Jonar Guarra, Jackie Rey Tragona, and Rodolfo Vilchez. The Guarras took 3rd place while the Tortals took the top plum.

Grandmaster Ricky Tenirife Golden Kamagong Arnis Kali Escrima Association-Pontevedra/NOBF demonstrated espada y daga and was promoted to grandmaster under the BNAFII by GM Navales. GM Felix A. Guinabo of Guinabo Arnis and combat Sports (GACS)/NOBF gave his support as a judge in the stickfighting competition.

GM Navales himself gave an espada y daga demonstration inspite of being the master of ceremonies.

The most diverse series of demonstrations was from the combined delegation of the Bacolod Oido de Caburata Arnis Society (BAODCAS), Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), and Negros United Fighting Arts Academy (NUFAA) which featured 8 styles of Negrense Filipino martial arts (FMA) from 6 places in the Negros Island.

Grandmaster Jose “Joe” Mancesa, Founder of NUFAA, with the help of NUFAA Chief Instructor and CMAS Board Director Wilson A. Alvarado, demonstrated the tight and close in style Alasabate Science which descended from the late Grandmaster Dominador Recto. Alvarado also had an exhibition with Stevie John Doctora.

The BAODCAS of Grand Patriarch Jose D. Aguilar of Murcia was represented by Master Ritchie S. Piodena and BAODCAS/CMAS Treasurer Joeffrey S. Deriada. They gave the first public demonstration of oido de caburata, Aguilar style in Bacolod City and were the first to use the oido protected stick in a public exhibition.

NOBF Treasurer and CMAS Business Manager Francis Stephen A. Diaz demonstrated Guarra style saber fighting, Silaynon espada y daga, and oido de caburata, Gubaton style. CMAS Founders Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado and James U. Sy Jr. showed the indigenous Bagoueño long stick fighting art of tapado. Sy also exhibited the Bacoleño art of Lapu-Lapu Viñas arnis and the Bayawanon wild judo.

Other Negrense FMA personalities present were Grandmaster Frank Abalajon of BNAFII, Grandmaster Dominador “Doming” D. ferrer of Kalantiaw Defense Society, Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido of the Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association, Master Elmer V. Montoyo of the Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association, Master Jimmy Villo of BAODCAS, etc.

2006 MAMAR-LOBRIDO REUNION HELD

Around a hundred family members attended the 2006 Mamar-Lobrido Clans Reunion held last May 1, 2006 at Had. Kaftres, Municipality of Murcia, Negros Occidental.

The family line started with Simproso “Pusoy” Mamar of Bago City. One of his children was Delfin Mamar who married Asuncion Carmona. The couple had 5 children: Consolacion, Pilar, Patrocinio, Romeo, and Erlinda.

Romeo "Nono" C. Mamar married Wilceta Teriales and they had 5 children: Romeo Jr. “Tokong,” May, Ruel, Edmund, and Baby. “Nono” founded the indigenous Bagoueño long stick fighting art of Original Filipino Tapado in 1960 and become its grandmaster.

Patrocinio C. Mamar had 8 children: Rodolfo, Nelson, Nestor, Jinny, Jose, Patrocinio Jr., Rogil, and Rodela Mamar. Jinny is a senior instructor of Original Filipino Tapado.

Consolacion Mamar married Florencio Lobrido Sr. and they had 7 children: Alfredo, Benefredo, Clodualdo, Derlina, Salvacion, Ramon, and Florencio Jr. All males of the Lobrido siblings were taught by their uncle “Nono.” Benfredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido is the 1st generation inheritor and current grandmaster of Original Filipino Tapado.

Family members partook in a sumptuous lunch. Then a series of martial arts exhibitions were given. GM “Bebing” Lobrido, Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA) Senior Instructor John “Jun-Jun” Maravilla, and Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA) Asst. chief Instructor Elmer “Don-Don” P. Montoyo Jr. demonstrated the different lines of Original Filipino Tapado as manifested in the long and short sticks.

Founder Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado, Chapter Head Dr. Raymund Antonio A. Maguad, and Treasurer Joeffrey S. Deriada, all of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc., performed Aikido tanto tori (knife disarms), Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis pang-agaw, and Long Quan (Dragon Fist) 2-man form.

Master of ceremonies was PIMAA-FTSDA and OFTLSFA Master Elmer V. Montoyo. Alfredo “Fred” M. Lobrido, in a closing speech, encouraged the younger members of the Mamar and Lobrido Clans to study and take to heart the art founded by the late Founder/Grandmaster Romeo “Nono” C. Mamar.

EXTRA JOSS M.A. EXPO SET

An exhibition of various martial arts disciplines will unfold during the 1st Regional Monthly Draw of Extra Joss Extra La Cash Part 2 this coming May 20, 2006, 1:00 P.M., at the Atrium Area, Gaisano City Bacolod Supermall, Brgy. Singcang, Araneta St., Bacolod City.

The event is being organized by ABS-CBN’s Barney Molina and will be featured as a 5 minute segment of Sabado Barkada scheduled for telecast on May 27, 2006 over at ABS-CBN. The martial arts exhibitions will jumpstart and punctuate the show and will symbolize the “lakas” one gets from drinking Extra Joss.

The Bacolod Aikido Enthusiasts (BAE) of Founder/Chief Instructor Maxwell “Max” J. Maun Sensei will be representing the Japanese pacifist art of Aikido “the way of the harmonious spirit.” Their demonstration will include the various methods neutralizing attacks using kansetsu waza “joint controls” and nage waza “projection techniques.”

The combined contingent of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. of Founders Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado and James U. Sy Jr., Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA) of Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” M. Lobrido, Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA) of Master Elmer V. Montoyo, and the Negros United fighting Arts Academy (NUFAA) of Grandmaster Jose "Joe" Mancesa will represent Negrense Filipino Martial Arts (NFMA) traditions from the south, particularly Bacolod, Bago, and Bayawan Cities including solo baston, sinawali, tapado, and pangamut.

The Arnis de Mano Assosacion de Silay (AMAS) of former Arnis Philippines (Arpi) Commissioner Grandmaster Felipe “Totong” Hilado will be representing the Negrense Filipino Martial Arts (NFMA) traditions from the north, particularly from Silay City.

Primary master of ceremonies for the martial arts exhibitions will be Maun Sensei.

JUFIMAC, CEFIMAC TO RUMBLE IN CALATRAVA KICKBOX

The San Carlos Jungle Fighters Martial Arts Club (SACA JUFIMAC) and Centralian Fighters Martial Arts Club (CEFIMAC) of Founder/Chief Instructor Diomedes N. Mamugay is set to compete in the upcoming 1st Barangay Dolis, Calatrava Invitational Karate Kickboxing Tournament on May 22, 2006 in Brgy. Dolis, Calatrava, Negros Occidental.

The tournament is being organized by the Victorias Martial Arts Federation (VMAF) of Founder/Chief Instructor Jojo Ibañez in cooperation with Barangay Doli officials as part of their fiesta celebration.

The SACA JUFIMAC and CEFIMAC Team includes Angelito Abella (50 kg.), Antonio Almencion Jr. (45 kg.), Pabian Manzano (54 kg.), Jovic Marane (40 kg.), Arnel Marino (52 kg.), Rene Ortiz (48 kg.), Johnmar Palabrica, and Reynaldo Simeon (56 kg.). The contingent is supported by San Carlos Team Coordinator Boy Hilay. The latest outing of SACA JUFIMAC was last April 22, 2006 during the 1st Combat Taekwondo Inter Club Tournament at the Gaisano City San Carlos Supermall, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental. Other expected competing teams are Caltrava Kickboxing, Tiger Karate Club, and Victorias Martial Arts Federation (VMAF).

3RD NEGROS PROVINCIAL TAPONDO COMPETITION SET

Tapondo International Federation Inc. (TIFI)-Negros Chapter is set to hold the 3rd (Negros) Provincial Tapondo Competition this coming May 26, 2006 at the Atrium Area, Gaisano City Bacolod Supermall, Brgy. Singcang, Araneta St., Bacolod City. Invited chapters include Calatrava, Escalante City, Iloilo City, San Carlos City, Silay City, and Toboso. Expected guests include TIFI Region 6 Director SPO4 Roberto Celiz and Bacolod City Mayor Bing Leonardia.

TAPONDO-NEGROS SHINE IN ILOILO TILT

Tapondo International Federation Inc. (TIFI)-Negros Chapter took home 5 trophies from the 2nd (Western Visayas) Regional Tapondo Competition last May 6, 2006 at SM City Iloilo, Manduriao, Iloilo City. The event was organized by TIFI Region 6 Director SPO4 Roberto Celiz and the Tapondo International Federation Inc. (TIFI)-Iloilo Chapter

TIFI-Negros winners were Alan Mario Facturan (jo kata), Jesus Vicente Gonzaga (kicking defense), Jessie Necesito (high thrust/long jump), and frances Nicole Nunez (women’s defense). TIFI-Negros also bagged the group dramatize title. TIFI-Negros is under the supervision of Chief Instructor Roy R. Flores Sensei, 4th degree black belt.

The Bungkag Lalaw (Ceremonial End of Mourning) of the late founder of Original Filipino Tapado, Grandmaster Romeo “Nono” C. Mamar, was well attended by around 70 members of the Mamar and Lobrido Clans and tapadistas last April 23, 2006 at the Mamar Residence, Prk. Langka, Brgy. Taloc, Bago City.

The program started with an invocation by Pastor Romeo Gumban, National Anthem by Robie Lobrido, and opening remarks by the late GM’s daughter May Mamar-Oquindo.

Then family members and close friends spoke of their memories of the late master. Among those who spoke were Nelson G. Carmona, Joe Conado, Alfredo “Fred” M. Lobrido (in lieu of Romeo “Tokong” Mamar Jr.), Clodualdo “Budoy” Lobrido, Ed Magbanua, Patrocinio C. Mamar, and Bong Rosquillo.

GM ‘Nono” Mamar founded the indigenous Bagoueño long stick fighting art Original Filipino Tapado in 1960 as an innovation of his previous studies of other styles of arnis such as lagas (now called oido), sinamak, and backhand. He proved the effectiveness of his new fighting art by putting it to the ultimate test - no protection full contact duels.

OFTLSFA Auditor and Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS) Founder Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado gave thanks and recognized the efforts of the old timers in keeping the art alive for the next generation. Grandmaster Benefredo “Bebing” Mamar Lobrido. President of the Original Filipino Tapado Long Stick Fighting Association (OFTLSFA), presented the new set of officers and the association’s S.E.C. registration certificate to all those in attendance.

Past Secretary Ed Magbanua officially turned over the association records to President GM Lobrido and current Secretary Elmer V. Montoyo.

The first batch of rank promotions under the leadership of GM Lobrido was also awarded. Oquindo assisted GM Lobrido in giving out the certificates. Those promoted to master in Original Filipino Tapado were Nelson G. Carmona, Clodualdo “Budoy” Lobrido, and Filipino Tang Soo Do Founder Elmer V. Montoyo. Jose “Joe” Pamilangco, who was one of four to be promoted by the late founder to the rank of master in 1986, was also given a certificate confirming his rank.

Those promoted to senior instructor were Wilson Cejas, Rufino Fernandez, Jinny J. Mamar, Romeo “Tokong” Mamar Jr., John “Jun-Jun” Maravilla, and Rolito A. Ruelan.

Master of Ceremonies was Elmer V. Montoyo. The event was covered and documented by CMAS Founder James U. MUAY ASSOCIATION OF THE PHILIPPINES EVENTS LINED UP

The official logo of the Muay Association of the Philippines, the sole recognized governing body for amateur Muay Thai in the Philippines as recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC).

The Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP), the sole National Sport Association (NSA) for Muay Thai in the country as recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC), has calendared most of its activities for the remainder of the year.

Muay is a Thai word which means “to pull together to form a single group” and refers to Thailand’s national martial art, sport, and “Science of the 8 limbs” (fists, elbows, legs, and knees). Muay Thai has a colorful history stretching back thousands of years. It has enjoyed support from the Thai Royal Family since the 12th Century A.D.

Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP) Visayas and Region 7 Head Kru Ike Xavier Villaflores of Dumaguete started the 2006 Dumaguete Milo Muay Thai Summer Clinic last April 3, 2006 at the Dumaguete Muay Association Headquarters, 90-A Dr. E. Miciano Rd., Dumaguete City, Oriental Negros. Schedule is from Monday to Saturday. Training for the first group (for kids) is 8:00-10:00 A.M.; the 2nd group (adults) is 3:00-4:30 P.M. The 2006 Bacolod Milo Muay Thai Summer Clinic was rescheduled to April 26, 2006 at the Philippine Integrated Martial Arts Academy-Filipino Tang Soo Do Association (PIMAA-FTSDA), Group K Complex, Brgy. The 2006 Kabankalan Milo Muay Thai Summer Clinic was started last April 17, 2006 at the Fellowship Baptist College (contact 0928-793-4199).

The Milo Muay Thai Summer Clinic is part of Muay Association of the Philippines’ goal of bringing the sport of Muay Boran (Traditional Thai Boxing) closer to the public in coordination with the National Sport Association’s 5 year plan of establishing Muay Thai as one of the Philippines’ medal rich mines in future international competitions and make it a by-word in the domestic sports community like taekwondo, karate-do, and judo.

The 2006 Milo Muay Thai Summer Clinic will close simultaneously nationwide on May 27, 2006. M.A.P.-Negros Occidental Chapter has plans to host a Muay Thai tournament in Bacolod City to coincide with the closing.

The San Carlos Jungle Fighters Martial Arts Club (SACA JUFIMAC) of Founder/Chief Instructor Diomedes N. Mamugay is scheduled to host Kru Villaflores for the conduct of the 3rd M.A.P. Negros Occidental Basic Muay Boran Instructor’s Course “Muay Thai Comes to San Carlos” tentatively on May 28, 2006 in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

M.A.P. Visayas under Kru Vilalflores is set to send a delegation at the 2006 M.A.P. National Open Amateur Muay Thai Championships on June 21-24, 2006 at the PSC-Philsports Complex (ULTRA), Meralco Ave., Pasig City.

The M.A.P National Open is an interregional competition held without the participation of the Philippine National Muay Thai Team. Competitors who get a gold, silver, or bronze in the National Open is then qualified to compete in the National Grand Prix, a national tournament for the best of the best including the Philippine National Muay Thai Team.

In June 2006, a 2-day Wai Kru (Traditional Muay Thai Ceremonial Dance) Seminar Workshop will be held either at the Dumaguete City Gymnasium or Macias Sports Complex to prepare instructors and athletes in the Visayas for the upcoming 2006 M.A.P Visayas Age Group Wai Kru Competition this October.

In November 2006, Kru Villaflores will organize the 2006 M.A.P Visayas Amateur Muay Thai Championships, tentatively in Dumaguete.

Meanwhile, Romnick Pabalate of Mabinay left Negros last April 26, 2006 to join the Philippine National Muay Thai Team.

ALOJADO CONDUCTS 6TH CONCEPTUAL MARTIAL ARTS SEMINAR

The 6th Negros Conceptual Martial Arts Seminar “Introduction to Pencak Silat Ohlaraga Basics” was conducted by Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS) Founder Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado for 10 USLS students last April 24-28, 2006 at the South Wing of the College Covered Court, University of st. La Salle, La Salle Avenue, Bacolod City.

The 10-hour course was meant to introduce students to the fundamentals of the Indonesian art of pencak silat ohlaraga. The lessons included basic calisthenics and attribute developing exercises, punching and kicking fundamentals, the 12 basic stances, and the patented pencak silat catching/scooping and sweeping techniques.

Alojado is the Bacolod City Vice Coordinator for the Philippine Pencak Silat Association (Philsilat) under the late Visayas Vice President and western Visayas Director Orlando G. Garpa of Tigbauan.

Those who attended the seminar were Rhea Baloco, Emilio Beroncal, Francis Carranza, Rejan Decna, Syriel Gahaton, Desiree Go, Joven Ledesma, Rommel John Panal, and Khenn Providencia.

The first 5 editions of the Negros Conceptual Martial Arts Seminar were held on January 28, 2005 (Universal Fundamentals), June 2005 (Tai Chi Chuan as Stress Management), July 2, 2005 (Introduction to Arnis Basics), January 20, 2006 (Reality-Based Martial Arts), and April 14, 2006 (Fundamentals of Tapado).

AMANTE'S NEG. OCC. WUSHU SANSHOU TEAM SHINES IN ELIMS

The 12-man Negros Occidental Team under Wushu Federation of the Philippines-Negros Occidental Coordinator Joery C. Amante took home a 3-3-3 medal haul in the 2006 Negros Island Wushu Sanshou Elimination Championships last April 20, 2006 at the Fountain Area, Robinson’s Place Bacolod, Mandalagan, Bacolod City.

The Negros Occidental Wushu Sanshou Team was composed of players from Amante’s Black Falcon Martial Arts Association-Main (BFMAA-Main), Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), Inc. of Founders Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado and James U. Sy Jr., and Escalante City’s Thunder Kick Martial Arts Club (TKMAC) of Chief Instructor Jess Flores.

Gold medalist from the Negros Occidental Team were Jake Donald Go of TKMAC (juniors 48 kg.), Renie Requiron of TKMAC (juniors 60 kg.), and Rosendo Trayco III of BFMAA-Main (seniors 48 kg.); silver medalists, Janry Amante of BFMAA-Main (juniors 48 kg.), Jet Lumawag of BFMAA-Main (seniors 52 kg.), and Joebin “JR” M. Rodriguez of CMAS-Porferia (seniors 48 kg.); and bronze medalists, Julius Dohinog of BFMAA-Main (seniors 48 kg.), Ephraem Manlapao of BFMAA-Main (juniors 48 kg.), and Andres Villarmia (seniors 56 kg.).

Renalyn “Ren-Ren” Jacob of BFMAA-Main went on to fight an exhibition bout since she didn’t have an opponent in her category. Other members of the Negros Occidental Team were John Manuel Fama of BFMAA-Main and Elizer “Jun-Jun” Agudo Jr. of CMAS-USLS.

Gold medalists in the event, which was presented by the Bacolod Sports Officials and Coaches Association (BASOCA), will represent the province in the upcoming National Wushu Championships in Manila. Janry Amante will join Go, Requiron, and Trayco when he climbs up to the juniors 52 kg. category which is vacant. Jacob, who didn’t have an opponent, automatically qualifies in the juniors 56 kg. category.

Meanwhile, Amante’s BFMAA-Main will be hosting a wushu tournament this coming May and September 2006 at Prk. Bulak.

COMBAT TKD TILT SUCCESSFULLY HELD

Combat Taekwondo Club-Canlaon Chapter of Chief Instructor Joerdan Oca took the championship in the senior boys division with a 3-1-0 medal haul while Masang Taekwondo Brotherhood of Chief Instructor Ricaredo Panunciar topped the kids boys and girls, juniors boys and girls, and senior girls divisions in the 1st Combat Taekwondo Inter Club Tournament held last April 22, 2006 at the Gaisano City San Carlos Supermall, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

Combat Taekwondo Club-Main (Saan Carlos) of Founder/President Lt. Col. Mercado placed 2nd in the seniors boys division with a 1-3-0 medal haul while the Central Negros College (CNC) Taekwondo Team of Chief Instructor Diomedes N. Mamugay was 2nd place in the junior boys division with a 0-4-2 harvest.

Silver medalists for the CNC TKD Squad were Antonio Almencion Jr. (jr. boys featherweight), Joemarie Manguilimotan (kids boys category C), Niño Rosales (bantamweight), and Sean Rey Sanchez (junior boys flyweight); bronze medalists were Remar Armohila (kids boys category A) and Rene Ortiz (lightweight).

Officials were Ret. Lt. Col. Epifamio F. Mercado (tournament director), Chief Instructor Ricaredo Panunciar (chairman, board of judges), CTC-Brgy. 2 Chapter of Chief Instructor Ernie Tranilla (chairman, belt promotion), Chief Instructor Diomedes N. Mamugay (tournament coordinator), Perlita Mercado (timer), James Artajo, Rogelio Cortado, Antonio Sampilo, and Ernie Tranilla (referee and judges), Jesus Hitoro (area inspector), and Shailene Mae J. Balbarino and Charry P. Loreno (master of ceremonies).

CMAS FOUNDER CERTIFIED AS WILD JUDO INSTRUCTOR

Master Ronnie “Nonoy” A. Rocillo certified Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS) Founder James U. Sy Jr. as a 4th generation instructor in the Bayawanon art of wild judo last April 4, 2006 at the Rocillo Residence, Gomez St., Bayawan City, Oriental Negros.

Sy started training in wild judo late last year. Prior to the promotion, Sy was already a certified instructor in several arts, among them Lapu-Lapu Viñas arnis, Togle style modern arnis, Galvarole style dynamic arnis, and aikido.

Sy earned the distinction as the first in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental to be so certified in wild judo, the indigenous Bayawanon empty handed art of jointlocking and throwing founded by Grandmaster Norberto “Norbing” A. Mamar.

The first set of promotions in wild judo was awarded by GM “Norbing” Mamar to Robennie “Nene” A. Rocillo (instructor) and Ronnie “Nonoy” A. Rocillo and Joselito R. Tomulto (master) last October 24, 2005 in Bayawan City. GM “Norbing” Mamar, who is a cousin of the late founder of Original Filipino Tapado Grandmaster Romeo “Nono” C. Mamar of Bago City, taught his art to the late Master Paquitoi “Paquit” Rocillo, who in turn taught his sons and Tomulto.

Sy had already started teaching wild judo to some core members of his Conceptual Martial Arts Society, among them Joeffrey S. Deriada, Francis Stephen A. Diaz, and Dante L. Robles.
