CMAS-USLS TURNOVER RITES & FAREWELL PARTY HELD

2-termer Club President Joy M. Gallos led outgoing Conceptual Martial Arts Society-USLS officers in turning over their rights and obligations to the new set of club officers for SY 2006-2007 during a simple ceremony and farewell party last March 18, 2006 at Palmas del Mar, JR Torres Subd., Bacolod City.

Multi-awarded President Gallos and Secretary Agnes Gonxha Empio will be graduating from the ranks of CMAS-USLS as they complete their respective bachelor’s degrees this March at the University of St. La Salle. The other officers and committee heads will still be in the roster but will be holding different positions.

The new set of officers for CMAS-USLS for SY 2006-2007 are Richie Añover (president), Reyna Jean Viñarta (vice president), Francis John Carranza (secretary), Emilio Beroncal (treasurer), and Norly Nabos (PIO). Committee heads are Elizer “Jun-Jun” Agudo Jr. (sports), Steve Mamaed (logistics), Viñarta (outreach), Rommel John Panal (spiritual), and Añover and Viñarta (major affairs).

The turnover was witnessed by CMAS-USLS Moderator Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado, CMAS-Main Founder James U. Sy Jr., and CMAS-Eroreco Chapter Head Victorio C. Perez.

Añover, the second female president of CMAS-USLS only next to Gallos, faces a great challenge of equaling or surpassing the club’s achievements under Gallos’ terms. Under Gallos, CMAS-USLS got its full accreditation from the Office of Student Affairs (OSA) of the university as one of its non-academic and only martial arts accredited club in 2005 and maintained it in 2006. Joey Arnold Toga, the club’s first president, worked for the probationary accreditation of the club in 2004.

Also under Gallos’ term, the club president and the club itself were finalists in the Most Outstanding Club President and the Most Outstanding Club in two straight years (2005-2006) during the university’s Corps d’ Elite awarding ceremonies. Gallos also spearheaded the sponsoring of the 1st ever multi-style martial arts tournament at the University of St. La Salle last September 2005 (5th USLS Martial Arts Expo A.K.A. 1st USLS Martial Arts Tournament).

During the 1st CMAS Hall of Fame Awards last January 20, 2006, Gallos was honored with the 2005 CMAS Leadership Award while CMAS-USLS was named 2005 CMAS Chapter of the Year.

The Corps D’ Elite is the prestigious award giving body of the University of St. La Salle which recognizes the achievements of students in various fields including academic and non-=academic, community outreach, culture and arts, spiritual service, sports, and student services.

MANDALAGAN TAKES 2 SILVER FROM BOXING TILT

The Brgy. Mandalagan Boxing Team took home 2 silver medals after their stint in the 2006 Inter-Barangay Boxing Tournament “Tinapungulay sa Pta. Taytay” (Inter Novice Amateur Boxing Championships) last March 13-16, 2006 at the Brgy. Pta. Taytay Multi-Purpose Gym, Pta. Taytay, Bacolod City.

Janry Amante and Ephraem Manlapao took the silvers for Brgy. Mandalagan. Both players have parallel encounters. Amante defeated a Brgy. 35 boxer via points in the elimination round of the 45 kg. pinweight division while Manlapao KOed his opponent in the same round for the 42 kg. category.

Both then did not get to fight in the semifinals because their respective opponents from Brgy. Granada backed out due to some reported controversies. In the finals, Amante and Manlapao lost their respective bouts to boxers from Bago.

Joery “Jun-Jun” Jr. of Brgy. Mandalagan was landing more punches in his elimination round bout but had to bow out from a controversial decision. Meanwhile, his teammates, Vincent Pehid (28 kg. cottonweight) and Oliver Solis (26 kg.), were clearly defeated by their respective opponents.

The Brgy. Mandalagan Boxing Team was headed by Kagawad Joery C. Amante with the support of Brgy. Capt. Baby Parreño.

1ST MAD PROJECT IN RP LAUNCHED

The Muay Association of the Philippines-Dumaguete City Chapter, represented by the Dumaguete Muay Thai Association, made history when it launched Muay Thai Against Drugs (MAD) for its pilot barangay-recipient, Bajum Pandan, last February 6, 2006 at the Auditorium of the Habitat for Humanity Project 4 in the interior part of Dumaguete City.

The project was the first ever to be conducted in the Philippines based on the MAD Campaign established by the Thai Government with the support of World MuayThai Council (WMC), International Federation of MuayThai Amateur (IFMA), and Federation of Amateur MuayThai of Asia (FAMA).

The free training is one of the several projects undertaken by the Dumaguete Muay Thai Association under Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP) Visayas and Region 7 Head Kru Ike Xavier Villaflores to promote Muay Thai and to develop the city’s grassroots talents. The program targets 8 to 12 year olds, an age bracket which have enough maturity for serious training and an ideal time for values formation.

The drug menace is an ever present problem in the modern society. It has come to a point where it can no longer be eliminated totally. The MAD Program strives to educate and develop the younger generation even before adolescence to save them from the ills brought about by substance abuse.

Brgy. Bajum Pandan was chosen because of its distance from the city proper. The Dumaguete Muay Thai Association wanted to bring muay Thai closer to the general public.

In Thailand, trainers under the MAD Project would go to poor communities and offer free lessons on Muay Thai. In the Philippines, the MAD project of Kru Villaflores has been approved by MAP President Kru Roberto B. Valdez for implementation. About 25 trainees are currently with the Dumaguete MAD Program.

FIGHT CLUB PLANS TO HOST GRAPPLING COMPETITION

With its success in establishing mixed martial arts (MMA) together with its allies in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental through 4 previous tournaments, the Fight Club Combat and Streetfighting Center (FC) of Founder/Chief Instructor Edwin J. Tusil Sensei is bracing itself for another historic feat: the hosting of a sports jiu-jitsu type grappling tournament.

Tusil Sensei came up with the idea after his group entered and took home 3 golden finishes in the 1st Paraw Regatta Grappling Tournament by the H.A.L.I.G.I. Foundation, Inc. (Honest and Accountable Living for Ilonggos and a Graft-free Iloilo) of Founding Chairman Hon. Jed Mabilog last February 18, 2005 at the 3rd level of SM City Iloilo, Manduriao, Iloilo City.

Tusil Sensei liked the way the tournament was run, ‘very professional and the rules are clear and well implemented. The H.A.L.I.G.I. Foundation did a good job. We are inspired to dso the same here in Bacolod. As early as this, we are told that the H.A.L.I.G.I. Foundation will be hosting a 2nd tournament next year. We want our event here in Bacolod to serve as a tune-up for our homegrown athletes. Who knows, it might not only be Fight Club who can send a delegation next year.”

Details of the proposed competition is still to be ironed out but definitely it would be fought with a gi (Japanese martial arts uniform). Throws and takedowns as well as jointlocking and choking techniques on the mat will comprise the allowed maneuvers. All strikes are not allowed.

As early as this Tusil Sensei is eyeing Philippine Amateur Judo Association (PAJA) judoka and Bacolod Aikido Enthusiasts (BAE) Founder/Chief Instructor Maxwell “Max” J. Maun to be the chief referee for the event.

The Fight Club will soon be announcing the details and giving out the invitations, hopefully about 3 months before the event.

WILD JUDO MANUAL TO BE DRAFTED

Master Ronnie “Nonoy” A. Rocillo had requested James U. Sy Jr., Founder of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), to document the standard techniques of wild judo through a manual. Sy, known for his research and documentation of the various Negrense Filipino martial arts, had started drafting the manual when he was introduced to the art last year.

Several of the pictures for the manual had already been taken last February 21 and 25, 2006 both in Bayawan and Bacolod Cities with the participation of Wild Judo Instructor Robennie “Nene” A. Rocillo, CMAS Co-Founder Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado, and Lapu-Lapu Viñas Arnis Instructor Joeffrey S. Deriada. The manual is meant to preserve the techniques of wild judo as taught by its founder.

Wild judo is an empty handed fighting method developed by Grandmaster Norberto “Norbing” A. Mamar which borrowed the widely popular Japanese term judo in reference to its use of various indigenous throwing, jointlocking, and other grappling techniques. Wild signifies that the art developed freely like the wild plants that grew in the forest. The art is now based in Bayawan City, Oriental Negros.

Grandmaster “Norbing” Mamar promoted Ronnie “Nonoy” A. Rocillo and Joselito R. Tomulto to master rank last October 24, 2005. Ronnie’s younger brother Robennie “Nene” A. Rocillo was named instructor. The newly promoted instructors were students of the late Master Paquito “Pacquit” Rocillo, the father of the Rocillos and a student of GM “Norbing” Mamar. The trio has a combined 79 years of martial arts experience.
