YASAY SABLE COVER PAGE IN RAPID JOURNAL

The indigenous Bagoueño art of Yasay sable made history when it was featured as the cover page of the Vol. 10 No. 2 4th quarter issue of the Rapid Journal, making it the first Negrense Filipino martial art (FMA) to be so featured in the Philippines’ one and only and longest running martial arts magazine/resource.

Previously, two Negrense FMA made it to the pages of Rapid Journal - tapado (Vol. 4 No. 4, artciel by Dr. Ned R. Nepangue of Cebu) and Lapu-Lapu Viñas arnis (Vol. 9 No. 3, article by James U. Sy Jr.) - but they were not cover features.

“The Deceptively Fast and Deadly Blade Art of Yasay Sable” by Negros’ foremost martial arts researcher and writer James U. Sy Jr. is actually an updated version of his original work “Yasay Sable: Deceptively Fast and Deadly Blade” which was published in three past issues of Western Visayas Journal (founded: 1983). The WVJ article was the first written record of the art while the RJ article was the first revision to reach the national and international readership. Rapid Journal is a quarterly publication based in Binondo with subscribers in Finland, France, and the USA and copies sold in Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Thailand.

“The Deceptively Fast and Deadly Blade Art of Yasay Sable” is a comprehensive documentation of the Yasay sable line, perhaps the oldest style of FMA in Bago City with a traceable and verifiable lineage. It can go as far back as 1900 during the time of the brothers Great Grandmasters Paterno and Daniel Yasay. The article traces the art’s possible origins, its transmission from one generation to another (now on its 5th generation), and its evolution to its present form and systematization as well as its technical characteristics. The article appearing in Rapid Journal is a shortened version of the Yasay sable entry for the author’s upcoming book on Negrnese FMA.

The historical piece is supported by 18 black and white action packed digital pictures that depict the trademark techniques of the style.

Today, Yasay sable is headed by 3rd Generation Grand Patriarch Paterno “Pater” V. Yasay, the grandson of Great Grandmaster Paterno Yasay and the son of Great Grandmaster Guillermo “Guimoy” Yasay. Grandmaster Paterno “Pater” V. Yasay taught the art to 4th Generation Masters Alvin Yasay (his son) and Ferdinand Emmanuel “Bobot” Y. Gayoles (his nephew). Master Gayoles is presently training the 5th generation of sabledors.

VIS MUAY THAI CHAMPIONSHIPS EYED

Muay Association of the Philippines (MAP) Visayas and Region 7 Head Kru Ike Xavier Villaflores is currently laying plans for a possible conduct of this year’s MAP Visayas Amateur Muay Thai Championships, which will serve as an elimination tournament for competitors from the Visayas to this year’s Nationals and National Grand Prix tournaments.

There is no tentative date yet because the schedules for the National Championships and National Grand Prix have not yet been established by the National Sport Association (NSA). MAP Visayas Chapter will be scheduling the Visayas Championships about 2 months before the Nationals.

The 2006 MAP Visayas Amateur Muay Thai Championships will be held in Dumaguete City, possibly at the Dumaguete Muay Thai Association Training Gym, 90-A Dr. E. Miciano Rd. or at the Macias Sports Complex.

The MAP Nationals is an interregional competition organized by the Muay Association of the Philippines without the participation of the Philippine National Muay Thai Team. Competitors who gets a gold, silver, or bronze in the nationals is then qualified to compete in the National Grand Prix, a national tournament for the best of the best including the Philippine National Muay Thai Team. MUAY THAI FITNESS LAUNCHED IN DUMAGUETE

The Muay Thai Fitness program was officially launched by the Dumaguete Muay Thai Association, a member of the Muay Association of the Philippines, last December 2, 2005 in Dumaguete City. Muay Thai Fitness is a specialized program for professionals, students, and children that integrates Muay Boran (Traditional Thai Boxing) movements into an aerobic focus and structure. The program aims to improve and maintain cardiovascular efficiency, physical fitness, flexibility, body coordination, reflexes, and of course, defensive skills.

Muay Thai Fitness program differs from the standard Muay Thai training regimen is that the trainee trains like a fighter but doesn’t spar. Such a program will best fit people whose objective is to slim down and/or stay fit or just to learn effective defensive skills as opposed to fighting in the ring. The program includes the standard Muay Boran punches, kicks, knees, elbows, and footwork executed in shadowboxing fashion and combined with various attribute enhancing exercises.

Muay Association of the Philippines Visayas and Region 7 Head Ike Xavier Villaflores, with the support of his teaching staff, spearheaded the successful launching of the program. His teaching staff include Marina M. Villaflores, Jojie Pasagdan, James Recaberte, Fortunato Sechico, and Walter Zaldiriaga among others.

Muay Thai (Muay Boran) in the Philippines is governed by the Muay Association of the Philippines, the duly recognized National Sport Association (NSA) by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC). Its president is Kru Roberto B. Valdez.

More than 20 trainees are now enrolled in the Muay Thai Fitness program, among them doctors, nurses, and other professionals. Interested parties may contact Kru Villaflores at 0928-772-2874.

WILD JUDO MANUAL BEING DRAFTED

Master Ronnie “Nonoy” A. Rocillo had requested James U. Sy Jr., Founder of the Conceptual Martial Arts Society (CMAS), to document the standard techniques of wild judo through a manual. Sy, known for his research and documentation of the various Negrense Filipino martial arts, had started drafting the manual when he was introduced to the art last year. He started taking pictures for the manual last February 21, 2006.

Wild judo is an empty handed fighting method developed by Grandmaster Norberto “Norbing” A. Mamar which borrowed the widely popular Japanese term judo in reference to its use of various indigenous throwing, jointlocking, and other grappling techniques. Wild signifies that the art developed freely like the wild plants that grew in the forest. The art is now based in Bayawan City, Oriental Negros.

GM “Norbing” Mamar promoted Ronnie “Nonoy” A. Rocillo and Joselito R. Tomulto to master rank and Ronnie’s younger brother Robennie “Nene” A. Rocillo to instructor last October 24, 2005. The trio, with a combined 79 years of martial arts experience, were students of the late Master Paquito “Pacquit” Rocillo, the father of the Rocillos and a student of GM “Norbing” Mamar.

RAPID JOURNAL TO BE DONATED TO USLS

Daniel Go, Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of Rapid Journal, will be donating 34 copies of the magazine to the University of St. La Salle College Library. Go is making the donation thru the Conceptual Martial Arts Society-University of St. La Salle (CMAS-USLS). CMAS-USLS Club President Joy M. Gallos and Club Moderator Narciso “Hansy” L. Alojado of the Center for La Sallian Ministries (CELAM) are currently making arrangements with the USLS College Library for the turnover.

Rapid Journal is a quarterly publication based in Binondo with subscribers in Finland, France, and the USA and copies sold in Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Switzerland, Taiwan, and Thailand. Rapid stands for Research and Propagation for Internal Arts Development.

Rapid Journal traces its roots from the now defunct Wushu Newsletter which was published by the Rapid Group/Department of the Wushu Federation of the Philippines (WFP) in 1995. Mr. Go, who is a 2 times SEA games tai ji quan champion (1991, 1993), headed that department. Wushu Federation of the Philippines is the National Sport Association of wushu in the country as recognized by the Philippine Sports Commission. Go started Rapid Journal in 1996 after leaving WFP.

As the Philippines’ one and only and longest running martial arts magazine/resource, Rapid Journal originally documented the internal or “soft” styles of martial arts such as tai chi chuan, pa kua chuan, and aikido. But later it also featured articles on the different Asian martial arts, including the various Filipino warrior traditions. Rapid Journal features historical, theoretical, and technical articles and reflections on the martial arts, healing arts, and related subjects like self protection and philosophy.

Rapid Journal has become home to some of the most prominent, respected, and credible martial arts historians, scholars, writers, and/or authorities in the Philippines today who can take their place next to world renown martial arts authorities such as Donn F. Draeger (Nihon koryu bujutsu), Stanley Pranin (aikido), John Chambers (European Renaissance fencing), etc. Notable Rapid journal writers include Dr. Ned R. Nepangue of Cebu, anthropologist and University of the Philippines Prof. Felipe Jocano Jr., FMA Master Pedro Reyes of Manila, University of the Philippines College of Human Kinetics Prof. Marilitz Dizon, Acupuncturist and FMA Master Rene J. Navarro, Negrense FMA historian and instructor James U. Sy Jr. of Bacolod, among others.
